A fantastic day at Lurgan Show
Showers of rain could not dampen the enthusiasm at Lurgan Park
Even the changeable weather and a few showers of rain could not dampen the enthusiasm at Lurgan Show on Saturday, June 7.
Competitors from all over Ireland congregated once again at Lurgan Park, one of the most picturesque settings in the agricultural show calendar.

In ring one, ride judge Michelle Underwood put all exhibits through their paces, while Emma Green studied conformation. Both ladies were visiting Lurgan Show for the first time from England and were impressed with the standard of horses forward. Their eventual champion was Zara Loftus’ mannerly four-year-old grey gelding, ‘Hollybrookfarm Charles’, after he won all three of his classes.
A delighted Zara admitted the horse had been an impulse internet purchase after a glass of wine one Saturday night: “I dreaded telling my mum what I’d done, but he has repaid my faith in him today!”
Over in ring two, Desna Lewis had all manner of Mountain and Moorland ponies to sort through, giving the nod to Sarah Beers’ home-bred Welsh Section A ‘Loneash Excalibur’ as her in-hand champion, whilst Mary McDonnell’s Connemara mare, ‘Follis Princess’ took the ridden honours, under Sienna Savage.
Ring three saw Joan Boyd judge some of the biggest classes of the day, namely the ever-popular Family Pony Lead Rein and Ridden. With record entries, Joan had the unenviable task of picking the placings and her champion in this section was young Pearl McCaul on her pony, ‘Whisper’.
Meanwhile, over in the Working Hunter ring, Richard Iggulden and co-judge Jess Whitney rattled through the pony classes. Raymond Caldwell’s track caught many seasoned exhibitors out and, as a result, clear rounds were thin on the ground! One duo that had no bother leaving the poles up was Taylor-Lee Doyle and her super ‘Telynau Darwin’, worthy pony worker champions.
By mid-afternoon, it was the turn of the horses. Ride judge Michael McGaffin, along with Brian Murphy, had no hesitation in awarding the championship to Yvonne Whiteside and her lovely ‘Harry’ - another young horse with a bright future ahead of him.
Julia Ryde Rogers oversaw proceedings in ring five, where there was a large variety of classes on offer. Another English first-time visitor to Lurgan, Julia loved her day at the show. One of the highlights was the Shetland section, generously sponsored again this year by the Cumberland family of Ronelle Stud. Nobody went home empty-handed, but after great competition and even greater craic, little Emily Robertson and her ‘Loghshore Luna’ were crowned Shetland champions!
Ring five also hosted the prestigious RDS Dublin Horse Show Breeders’ Championships, under the watchful eyes of guest judges, Maurice Coleman and Clare Ryan. Hotly contested by mare and foal combinations from all over Ireland, Derry Rothwell’s Greenhall Catwalk qualified in the first class, along with Valerie Davis’s Becca Baby.
Not to be outdone, Desmond Gibson’s Drumbo Bluebell and John Roche’s ever-faithful ‘Assagart Fairytale’ booked their ticket to Ballsbridge in the second division.
All in all, a fantastic day at Lurgan Show!
