Antrim Show: a fantastic success
ANTRIM Show organisers’ prayers were clearly answered for their 116th show on Saturday, July 27, when the sun shone down on the wonderful venue of Shane’s Castle Estate, just outside Antrim, by kind permission of the O'Neill family.
The good weather certainly brought out the crowds, both in terms of competitors and spectators - in fact, it is thought this year was one of the best attended to date! The show saw record-breaking sheep entries this year and over 120 traders were present on the day.

Hello and welcome to Horse&Field. Our aim is to support local, grass roots equestrian enthusiasts and competitors and keep you all informed of what’s happening in the horsey world, as well as covering all things agricultural. If you haven’t already subscribed you can do so below:
Antrim Show has established itself as the largest one-day show when it comes to livestock; this year surpassed all expectations and saw a huge entry of 1,000 sheep and 600 cattle across the various classes! The cattle exhibitors were competing for some very prestigious titles in both the dairy and beef sectors and the judges had an unenviable task in deciding between the top-class animals forward.
Organisers tried something new this year, with an exhibition of classic cars and tractors. This was a positive addition to the show and attracted the attention of many people, who stopped to admire the vehicles on their way round the variety of stands, displays and competitions in the showgrounds.
Horse and pony classes were well-supported and there really was something for everyone - it was lovely to see the tiny tots competing in lead rein classes in one ring, making their first steps into equestrian competition, while in another, some of the most talented show jumpers in the country competed up to Grand Prix level!
From a start list of well-known names, Paul Caves and ‘CAFRE Quality Clover’ were the worthy winners of the Grand Prix and the lion’s share of the £1,250 prize fund, sponsored by Swift Shift Removals Ltd. Other class winners were Lesley Coey (90cm), Shannon Curran (1m), Adam Adair (1.10m) and Emma Jackson (1.20m).
There was a huge variety of equestrian classes on offer. Alongside the SJI show jumping classes, there were working hunter classes for horses and ponies, as well as showing classes for horses and ponies, both ridden and in-hand. The pony classes were run by the NPS, with some highly respected judges travelling to lend their expertise and knowledge to the show rings.
As ever, the showing fraternity were turned out to perfection - although the one possible downside of the sunny day was that tweed may not have been the best wardrobe choice! There were many glowing faces by the end of the day, but after the very changeable summer weather, a dry day is always preferable to the alternative…!
Congratulations to all those who took part, especially to those who went home with rosettes and even sashes! The list of prize winners and champions may be found below.
A huge thank you is extended to all the exhibitors, sponsors, trade stand exhibitors, judges, stewards, volunteers and show visitors, who gave up their time to make this year’s show such a fantastic success and to the O'Neill family for the use of their spectacular grounds.
Thanks must also go to photographers David McDonald (show jumping) and Ellie Johnston (showing and Working Hunter) for providing the images to accompany this report - a wide selection of images from the show are available to purchase online from their sites.
Organisers are already looking forward to next year’s show and look forward to seeing everyone then!
