Braving the elements at Armagh Show
Competitors face heavy rain to take part in classes at Gosford Forest
Perhaps surprisingly, the bad weather on Saturday did not have a big impact on entries at Armagh County Show, as most competitors braved the heavy rain to take part.
The Ridden Horse classes were generously sponsored by Bluegrass Horse Feeds and judged by Christopher Connell and Matthew Dickinson, who were very impressed by the high standard of horses.
The Champion Ridden Horse title went to ‘Carnally Solarsky’, owned by Declan O’Neill and ridden by the very capable Gwen Scott.

Ring one was judged by Rosemary Keeling from Suffolk, who was very impressed with the large turnout for the new classes in traditional Gypsy Cobs. The championship here went to ‘SD Dream King’, owned and shown in-hand by Samuel Crothers.
The show saw numerous entries from the Northern Ireland Donkey Society, with the title of Champion Donkey being awarded to ‘Dec’, owned by Jill Castles.
Moving on to Ring 2, the Miniatures and Pony Showing were judged by David Kelly, who found his Champion in ‘Brooklyn Dream Boy’, owned by Anthea Steele.
Many thanks to Capper Trading Ltd. who sponsored the Connemara Championship, where in a large ring of competitors, ‘Galloon Mayday’, owned by James Naan took the Championship rosette.
The judge in Ring 3 was Father Christy McCormick, who had a very busy day with the wide variety of Native Ponies, while Ring 4, judged by James Murphy, saw Kenny Bell win the Three-Year-Old Irish Draught class.
Family Ponies were judged by the popular Mrs Joan Boyd, who celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary at the show. The Champion Family Pony was owned by Mrs Sharon Matthews, ‘Thats My Guy’, ridden by Niall Devlin. Many thanks to Freeburn Farm Feeds for sponsoring these popular classes.
At the top of the hill, where the ground remained dry, Working Hunter Ponies were judged by father and daughter team, Nicholas Byrne and Catherine Byrne. Nicholas commented that, in 30 years judging, he had never seen a child do a Working Hunter class side saddle and credit for this must go to Kathryn McClelland and her daughter Edie, who rode ‘Buzz’ over the cross-poles.
Working Hunter Horse classes in the afternoon were judged by the popular Kevin McGuinness and David Kirkpatrick, who had the difficult task of choosing their champion and reserve Working Hunter Horses from a very large field of competitors. The eventual champion was Declan O’Neill’s horse ‘Tul Na Ri’, ridden again by Gwen Scott, with Yvonne Pearson’s ‘Claudie the Dandy’ ridden by Lesley Jones taking reserve.
