Catherine and 'Clovalent' claim Grand Prix at Portmore championships
Three days of good weather and great jumping at Aghalee centre
Portmore Equestrian Centre, Aghalee held their three-day Spring Championships from May 2 to 4 with good weather and great jumping throughout!
The Bluegrass 1.30m Grand Prix was a fitting conclusion to a weekend of first-class show jumping, with Catherine Thornton steering ‘Clovalent’, owned by Keonan Stables Ltd, into the top spot, followed by Shane O'Reilly riding Brian McConville’s ‘Susan II’ into the runner-up position.

Friday’s classes ran from 90cm up to 1.30m and included age sections. The 90cm and 1m classes saw a lengthy list of clear rounds, while the 1.10m class, which included the Five-year-olds, was won by Arielle Allen riding Joanne Sloan Allen’s ‘WKD Valencia’, ahead of Danni Jennings on her own ‘Super Star’ in second.
The 1.20m class, including the Six-year-olds, saw Alex McMaster take the top spot on board Paula McMaster’s ‘Ludovick’, with the runner-up position going to Gillian Beale King riding Lawrence Patterson’s ‘Cornet's Fox Z’. Meanwhile, the 1.30m class was won by Sam El Dahan with Joanne Sloan Allen’s ‘WKD Toronto’, followed in second by Eve Donnelly riding Francis Donnelly’s ‘Tolan Felicity’.
On Saturday, the 90cm class saw a number of combinations sharing the win. The 1m class included the A Amateur prize and saw Grace McGarry finish first with David Heaney’s ‘Quality Quick Star’, followed by Lorraine Lyttle on her own ‘Coolas’ in second, while the 1.10m class included the AA Amateur prize, with the win going to April McCrea on her own ‘Bob’, followed by Taylor McKnight riding Christine McKnight’s ‘Tassagh Sky Doctor’ into second place.
The 1.20m class included the Highest placed Young Rider prize and saw Louis Mellier take the win on board ‘Carrick Quidams Flake’, owned by Jack, Tom and Robert Jones, with second place going to Suzanne Posnett riding Pamela Posnett’s ‘Maxim Van Overis Z’.
The highlight of the day was the Bluegrass 1.25m Mini Grand Prix, which was won by Samantha Kirk on her own ‘FSS Indigo’, followed by Shannon Treanor with Shane Treanor’s ‘Trebra Lorenzo’.
Sunday’s 90cm two-phase class saw a large number of clear rounds. This was followed by the 1m championship, which was won by Grace McGarry riding David Heaney’s ‘Quality Quick Star’, with second place going to James Courtney-Cadam on board Linda Courtney’s ‘DPS Dunkirk’.

The 1.10m championship went to Alana Lavery on her own ‘Lucy Ludo’, with April McCrea on her own ‘Bob’ finishing second. Shane O'Reilly won the 1.20m championship with Brian McConville’s ‘BWE Vain Hero’, followed by Charlotte Harding riding Jayne Clarke’s ‘Velvet Flare’ into second.
