Easter Derby goes down a treat at Tyrella
East Down Pony Club hosts successful competition at popular Co Down venue
Easter Monday saw the Tyrella Derby being run by East Down Branch of the Pony Club, in conjunction with Holmestead Saddlery and with the kind permission of John and Hannah Corbett.
There were six classes held on the day, from 45cm up to 1m, which were open to all - not just Pony Club members - with some super performances at all levels!

The Fledglings Enclosed Ring hosted Arena Derby classes at 45cm, 55cm and 65cm, while the full Derby course was open for competitors in the 80cm, 90cm and 1m classes.
There was no optimum time for the 45cm and 55cm classes, they were decided on penalties only. In the 45cm class, 13 talented competitors jumped clear to share the win, while six shared the spoils in the 55cm class with clear rounds.
An optimum time was employed in the 65cm class, with Daisy Murphy steering Bonecastle Lass to a clear round closest to the optimum time to take the win. The runner-up spot went to Lily Crawford riding ‘Wilber’, ahead of Zahrah Zahoor-Ali on ‘Deedee’ in third.
Matilda Ham rode ‘Lily’ round the full Derby course to win the 80cm class, followed by Maire Kelly on ‘Twist of a Tail’ in second and Ava Wickie on ‘Fizz bomb’ in third.
The 90cm class saw Darcey Faulkner on ‘Carnaween Sunshine’ take first place, with Freddie Thompson on ‘Honkey Tonkin Ted’ in second and Katie Annett on ‘Illane Duke’ in third.
Ellen Macnabb and ‘Captain Cruzdown’ were the winning combination in the 1m class, with Christine Findlay on ‘Parklodge over and under’ taking the runner-up position and Charley Hanna on ‘CC’ in third.
