Kilwaughter welcomes Antrim Chase
A cold day, but hot port and an exhilarating ride against the backdrop of the Antrim Hills
By P Weir (Chair)
The weather was kind to Antrim Chase yet again on Saturday, January 18 for their annual outing to Kilwaughter Lime works.
Horses and riders gathered in the car par from 12 midday, which allowed ample time to get caught up with everybody’s Christmas and New Year’s jollies, while warming their hands on the spicy hot port provided. The white lime stones in the car park created the impression of snow, and it was cold enough to believe it.

By 1pm, riders were mounted up and raring to go. There were a total of 12 riders, including a few non-members, who were invited along and who are always given a very warm welcome.
The ride was organised by Kathy Delargy and led by Sharon and Eileen. Sharon was on the smaller horse, so she had the very important job of gate opening and closing! The group hacked approximately two miles up into the hills, then veered off road, through a little farm for their first gallop. The wonderful Antrim Hills being the back drop.
Horses and riders now well warmed up, they headed higher into the hills, which allowed for a beautiful hack around the wind turbines, dropping the ride back down and through another farm towards Kilbane Castle ruins. This provided a stunning back drop for some photos.
They returned to base with rosy cheeks and tired horses, only to be welcomed by hot, home-made vegetable soup and crusty bread, followed by tea, coffee and cake.
A great time was had by all, raising a grand total of £350 for Air Ambulance NI.
The next Antrim Chase ride is this Saturday, January 25, where they will ride through Randalstown and Shane’s Castle, with lots of jumps to challenge horses and riders. Meet at 12.30pm at 125 Ahoghill Road, Randalstown, BT41 3EP.
**Please note that, due to weather conditions, this ride will now be a hack (with some optional jumping) at Drumanaway - meet at the same address, given above. The Randalstown ride has been postponed.**
