KR Equine offers a holistic approach...
Forward-thinking veterinary practice keeps their clients informed
KR Equine Veterinary Services were delighted to host a unique client evening on Wednesday, June 11, exploring ‘A holistic approach to lameness and poor performance’. Veterinary Surgeon Chris Akkari took the lead and was joined by respected local equine physiotherapist Clare-Maria Currie of CMC Physio and Ella Boyle from the dedicated rehabilitation and fitness facility ‘Glebe Equine’.
The evening saw an exceptionally large turnout of equine owners, clients and industry professionals in attendance, keen to explore the practical perspectives on diagnosing and managing equine issues with a whole horse mindset.
Chris spoke about assessing lameness and identifying possible causes, as well as talking about treatments. He also spoke about gastric ulcers in equines, which can have a huge impact on performance.

Hello and welcome to Horse&Field. Our aim is to support local, grass roots equestrian enthusiasts and competitors and keep you all informed of what’s happening in the horsey world, as well as covering all things agricultural. If you haven’t already subscribed you can do so below:
Clare-Maria Currie has a wealth of physiotherapy experience in humans and equines. She spoke in depth about just some of the issues that she consulted on regularly and the various treatment methods that she employs. Clare-Maria also talked about exercises and stretches that can be done with horses and ponies at home that may build strength and flexibility and prevent injury from occurring.
Ella Boyle of Glebe Equine spoke of the various tools she uses in rehabilitation, as well as in fitness training of horses, such as a water treadmill, K-Laser therapy, BEMER therapy and Instant Cryo, at her purpose-built facility.
Collaboration amongst professionals remained the key theme to yielding better results for equine wellbeing and longevity. Much discussion and interest was generated during the event and an informative and enjoyable evening was had by all.
KR Equine Vets are indebted to Clare Marie Currie and Ella Boyle for imparting their specialist expertise on the night.

The evening concluded with a raffle in aid of ‘Air Ambulance Northern Ireland’, which proved to be a great success and KR would like to to extend their thanks to the many local business who generously donated fantastic prizes for this worthwhile cause.
When asked why he feels it important to host evenings like this, Chris said: “I enjoy hosting the evenings, as both learning and teaching give me a real buzz! All aspects of veterinary medicine, and the professions associated with paraprofessionals, are constantly evolving and progressing. As veterinary surgeons, I think it's important for us to provide owners with all the up to date information and choices they need to make informed decisions.
“I hope these evenings allow people to keep up to date with what's available to keep their horses in tip-top condition,” Chris concluded.
If you missed out on this one, please keep your eyes peeled for the next. KR Equine plans to hold another in the autumn, alongside colleagues from Anglesey Lodge Equine Hospital.
