Northern Ireland Festival showcases local talent
Irish Pony Society Northern Area riders delivered standout performances at three-day show
This year’s Northern Ireland Festival was held at Cavan Equestrian Centre over the weekend of May 2 to 4 and saw some wonderful equestrian talent over the three days. With classes to suit all shapes and sizes of horses and ponies, showing and Working Hunter, judges had their work cut out to choose the worthy winners.
There were many local horse and pony owners and riders who did exceptionally well at this year’s show, with familiar names such as Jamie Smyth and Gwen Scott among the horse supreme champions, while Bryléi Gallagher, Sophia Martin, Ella Dickson, Amelia McCartan, Amelia Logan, Esther Lowry, Elissa Cowan, Taylor-Lee Doyle and Ellie Murphy among the recognised competitors in the list of pony supreme champions - many of these being Irish Pony Society Northern Area members, as further detailed below.

IPS NA riders excel
Members of the Irish Pony Society Northern Area enjoyed a weekend to remember at the Northern Ireland Festival, with riders delivering standout performances across a range of classes.
A highlight of the festival is its rare offering of Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) qualifiers - an exceptional opportunity for Irish riders to secure a place at what is widely regarded as the pinnacle of horse and pony showing in the UK and Ireland.
With limited qualifying places available and fierce competition, securing a coveted HOYS ‘golden ticket’ is a true mark of excellence.
The Northern Area is immensely proud to celebrate two of its members who achieved just that.
Ellie Murphy, riding the ever-consistent ‘Bronheulog Harvey’, secured their place at HOYS in the M&M Working Hunter Pony not exceeding 133cm class. At 23 years of age, ‘Harvey’ is a veteran of the show ring and no stranger to competing at the NEC in Birmingham. However, this marks the first time he and Ellie will compete together at this level - a truly special moment for this partnership.
Joining her on the road to HOYS is Zoe Price with her lovely Connemara pony ‘Loughderg Star’, who claimed victory in the Ridden Connemara HOYS qualifier. On the day, the pony was beautifully ridden by Ciara Mullen, sealing the win in a hotly-contested class.
With over 2,000 entries across the weekend, the Northern Ireland Festival stands as one of Ireland’s most prestigious showing events. Securing a top-two placing - or even better, a championship title - at this level is an incredible achievement and a testament to the calibre of riders representing the Northern Area.
Esther Lowry and her pony ‘Annandale Prince Charming’ had a superb show, winning their 133cm Show Hunter Pony class and going on to take the coveted title of Reserve Supreme Ridden Pony.
Amelia Logan enjoyed a phenomenal weekend with five top-two finishes across three ponies. Leading the way was ‘Fielden Real McCoy’, who secured two wins in the Part-Bred First Ridden and Show Pony First Ridden, as well as two championships and ultimately finished as First Reserve Mini Supreme.
Amelia McCartan also made her mark, with a win in the Open M&M Lead Rein, before going on to take the Open Mini M&M Championship. On Sunday evening, the partnership was crowned Overall Mini Supreme Champions, a remarkable achievement for such a young competitor.
Elissa Cowan, riding ‘Briolen Cindy’, delivered a polished performance to win both their Young Riders class and the M&M Small Breeds Ridden class. Finally, they went on to take the title of First Reserve Ridden Supreme Pony, rounding off an exceptional weekend.
With so many outstanding performances, it was a weekend full of pride, celebration and sporting excellence for the IPS Northern Area.
Nicole Peoples – 1st in Novice 153cm SHP and 2nd place in Pony Equitation (rider aged between 14 and 16) riding Ballyhindon Boy.
Rebecca Cowan – 1st in Pony Performance 65cm, 2nd in 138cm SP, Novice 133cm SHP and Novice 133cm WHP riding Dowhills Strolling Minstrel.
Elissa Cowan – 1st in Young Riders, Open M&M Ridden Small Breeds and First Reserve Supreme in the Ridden Pony Supreme riding ‘Briolen Cindy’. She was also first in Novice M&M Ridden Small Breeds and Novice 133cm SHP riding ‘Janala Mr Tom’.
Ryan Anderson – 1st in Novice Ridden Cob and 2nd Maxi Ridden Cob riding ‘Highview Water Mark’. They were also Novice Ridden Horse Champion.
Casey-Lee Millar – 2nd in the Open 133cm SHP and in the Young Riders, Open M&M Ridden Small Breeds riding ‘Bunbury Suarez’.
Maximillion McDonnell – 1st in both the Open 153cm SHP and Senior Veteran ridden, Champion Veteran and 2nd in the Festival 153cm WHP riding ‘Knocklucas Chloe’. He was also 2nd in the Connemara Stallion Ridden and Festival 143cm M&M WHP riding ‘Breaffy Heaven’.
Amelia Logan – 1st in the Part-Bred First Ridden and Open Show Pony First Ridden and taking Mini Part-Bred, Mini Show Pony and First Reserve Mini Supreme Champion on ‘Fielden Real McCoy’. 2nd in the Senior Ridden Veteran Pony and Open M&M First Ridden on ‘Llafar Barthez’. 2nd in the Open SHP First Ridden on ‘Garnagree Golden Bravado’.
Isla Christie – 1st in the Open SHP First Ridden, taking Reserve Champion, and 2nd in the Novice SHP First Ridden riding ‘Timber’.
Eirin Wardle – 1st in the Novice 122cm SHP riding ‘Timber’.
Esther Lowry – 1st in the Open Ridden 133cm SHP, Reserve Champion SHP and Reserve Champion Supreme Ridden Pony riding ‘Annandale Prince Charming’.
Emmalee Turley – 2nd place in Connemara Ridden Pony (mares) and in the Connemara O16 WHP riding ‘Belsa Beag’.
Myia Latto – 1st place in the Open Show Pony Lead Rein, 2nd in the Open First Ridden Show Pony and Reserve Mini SP Champion riding ‘Chaseford Camelia’. 2nd in the Festival M&M not exc. 122cm WHP on ‘Manorlea Calipo’.

Rachel O’Rourke – 2nd place in the Open Show Pony Lead Rein on ‘Brookllan Dream Boy’.
Jocelyn Hutchinson – 1st place in the Novice Show Pony Comb. Heights and 2nd in the Open 148cm Show Pony riding ‘Rotherwood it’s the Business’, owned by John McCormick.
