Northern Region riders excel at EI National Championships
Wins in four National titles and all three HSI Studbook Series classes
Northern Region riders made their long trip to the Eventing Ireland National Championships worthwhile last weekend, where they won seven classes out of the 17 on the schedule, including four National Championship titles and all three of the HSI Studbook Series classes!
Hello and welcome to Horse&Field. Our aim is to support local, grass roots equestrian enthusiasts and competitors and keep you all informed of what’s happening in the horsey world, as well as covering all things agricultural. If you haven’t already subscribed you can do so below:
The National Championships were to be held at Castle Irvine Necarne, but due to the very wet spell of weather and resulting ground conditions, organisers made the difficult decision to cancel. All was not lost, however, as Danny and Michelle Dulohery stepped in at short notice to run the National Championships at Kilguilkey House, Mallow, Co. Cork - sincere thanks are extended to them for their efforts in pulling it all together.
The new National Champions are Suzanne Hagan (EI 110), Lucy Toombs (EI 100 Amateur), Gemma Esler (EI 90) and Tilley Tumilty (EI 90P); while the HSI Studbook Series Six-year-old class was won by Steven Smith riding ‘Tullaher Paudie’, while Clare Abbott secured the top spots in both the Five-year-old class with ‘MT Luxaan’ and the Seven-year-old class with ‘Drumnaconnell Kobie’.
Northern Region riders also claimed a long list of other top six placings, so there were many smiling faces and well deserved ribbons making their way back up north again after the event! Alongside those already named, ribbons went home with the following riders: Casey Webb, Joseph Murphy, Tom Rowlatt-McCormick, Molly O’Connor, Nichola Wray, Ciarraí Rice, Rosey Herron, David O’Connor, Katie McKee, Johanna Herron, Jonathan Steele, Emily Black, Holly Rice, Lauren Madine, Siofra Mason and Mya McMullan.
‘Honorary’ Northern Region members, Orla Sheehan and Michaela Donnelly placed third and fourth respectively!
It was an educational outing for all those who competed, whether placed or not and no doubt, there will be many horses and riders who will improve greatly following the experience.
Regional Team competitions ran alongside the individual classes, with Northern Region teams winning two of the three team events! These were the EI 90/ EI 80 class (Northern Commedagh Commanders) and the EI 100 class (Northern Donard Stars).
All that remains to be said is congratulations to all those Northern Region combinations who attended the National Championships, those who came home with ribbons and, in particular, those who claimed titles and sashes!
Thanks are extended to Irish Eventing Times and Millstreet Horse Photography for providing the photographs of the winners to accompany this report.
