Talented combinations take to the track at Randalstown venue
Connell Hill Equestrian, Randalstown, showcased the latest leg of the TRI Equestrian Ulster Region SJI Autumn Pony Tour, with a complete range of classes on Saturday, October 19, from 128 50cm right the way up to 1.10m/1.20m Children on Horses. Countless talented combinations took to the track under the watchful eye of National Course Builder Mr William Crean, ably assisted by Simon Jackson, and suitably adjudicated by Denise Withers and Marie Fallon O’Kane.
The first two classes of the day were sponsored in kind by the Creighton family of Connell Hill and all competitors in the Under 10s 128 50cm and 60cm classes proudly received trophies and red rosettes.

Hello and welcome to Horse&Field. Our aim is to support local, grass roots equestrian enthusiasts and competitors and keep you all informed of what’s happening in the horsey world, as well as covering all things agricultural. If you haven’t already subscribed you can do so below:
The 128 classes wrapped up with Alice Steele in the metre taking first and second places on Victoria Steele’s ‘Zulus Dream’ and ‘Tynwydd Alum’, in the fastest times of 22.44 and 24.96 seconds respectively.

The arena the welcomed the 138 category combinations, taking up the challenge of a demanding yet forward moving course ahead, captivating spectators with plenty of action and jumping against the clock. Clear winner Cliodhna McEvoy on Martin McEvoy’s ‘Etoile Des Chesnaies’ took the honours of first place in the 138 1.10m in a very fast time overall of 19.92 seconds.
The course was re-adjusted and fine-tuned for the 148 category and competitors, teamed up with their capable equine partners, awaited the opportunity to show off their remarkable horsemanship skills to accelerate against the clock, over fences of up to 1.20m. Zoie Dobbins won her class on Amanda Lynch’s ‘Derryvane Belle’, followed with a close second place for Oliver Kinnear on Sonya’s six-year-old ‘Little Mr Tattersalls’.

As the evening moved forwards, so did the Children On Horses, navigating the final fences of the day to bring to a close a hotly contested and very successful show. Robin Bingham’s ‘Strandhill Pacino’, ridden by granddaughter Sofia, cut a super time of 27.43 seconds taking home the win, while Martin Mellett’s ‘Rock Hill Girl’, ridden by Zoe Mellett, took home a close second and Samuel Smyth’s ‘Ballylurgan Holdup’, ridden by grandson Christopher, took a credible third place in the 1.10/1.20m - well-deserved congratulations go their way!
Connell Hill would like to wish all competitors Good Luck in the league ahead and extend their thanks to everyone who took part on the day, the SJI judges, course designers, arena staff, show office staff, the riders, grooms and families.
