Pony athletes book RDS tickets at The Meadows

Busy weekend of competition sees RDS Pony qualifier at Lurgan venue

The Meadows Equestrian Centre, Lurgan saw a busy weekend of competition on May 3 and 4, as they hosted RDS qualifiers for ponies on Saturday, followed by Young Riders, Children on Horses and Equitation jumping on Sunday.

Saturday’s pony qualifiers saw two classes in each of the three height categories, with a judged class for six and seven-year-olds as well as the regular height class. Some very impressive and very speedy rounds were ridden as the young athletes did their best to secure their coveted ticket to compete at Dublin Horse Show in August.

The 128 Six/ Seven-year-old class attracted a large list of competitors, with Georgia Foley riding Seamus Daly’s ‘Carlton Abi’ into first place, followed by Emily Mason on Linsey Mason’s ‘Renaissance Numizmat’ in second.

Benjamin O'Connor claimed the 128 qualifier on board Ronnoco Jump ULC’s ‘The Million Dollar Baby’, with Hannah Horan placing second with Barry Horan’s ‘Neary Perfect’.

The 138 Six/ Seven-year-old class saw Alayna Hawkins take the red ribbon with Shane Hawkins’s ‘Kiltiernan Silver Sally’, while Ella Rush slotted into the runner-up position with John Kennedy’s ‘Jubuki Blue De Choc’.

Cathal McKeon-Devaney won the 138 qualifier with Bob Sweeney’s ‘Cornhill Snowey’, followed by Lucia Keane on Susan Keane’s ‘Alto de Fougnard’.

The 148 Six/ Seven-year-old qualifier belonged to Saoirse O'Neill on board Aoife O'Neill’s ‘Corona Boy’, with Saoirse Hughes not far behind in second with Lucy Hughes’s ‘Annaveigh Flashback 69’.

Ruben Foley took victory in the 148 qualifier with Michael O'Sullivan’s ‘Wineport Q Junior’, followed by Emily O'Brien on Jill Twomey’s ‘Sweet Renees Girl’ in second place.
