Garrity gets gold at Autumn Pony Tour Finals
Ulster Region athletes show their talent at Portmore finale
It was a great weekend of jumping at Portmore Equestrian Centre, Aghalee on Saturday, November 2 and Sunday, November 3 and the Show Jumping Ireland Ulster Region Pony Committee would like to thank all the athletes, who travelled to compete in the TRI Ulster Region Autumn Pony Tour Finals 2024.
As always, this league proved very popular with competitors and was eagerly contested up to the last, with these young athletes keen to get a podium finish!

Hello and welcome to Horse&Field. Our aim is to support local, grass roots equestrian enthusiasts and competitors and keep you all informed of what’s happening in the horsey world, as well as covering all things agricultural. If you haven’t already subscribed you can do so below:
Stakes were high, with the generous sponsorship of TRI Equestrian, who provided fabulous rugs and vouchers worth around £5,000. The Ulster Region Committee also provided prizes in excess of £8,000.
Aldyth Roulston, Ulster Region Pony Committee, said: “Our heartfelt thanks must to go to Gareth McCombe and TRI Equestrian, who have now sponsored the Ulster Region Pony Tours for the past nine years, supporting two Tours per year, a massive commitment which is most appreciated by the Ulster Region Pony Committee and Young Athletes alike.
"Again both of our TRI Equestrian Tours have been exceptionally well-supported by our athletes this year, a true sign that they are a force to be reckoned with, producing many top horse and pony riders to date, including Niamh McEvoy... now a household name in the show jumping world!
“Our next big get together will be at the Ulster Region Pony Awards on February 1, 2025 at Corick House Hotel and Spa.
“As a result of a very well-supported Pony Awards earlier this year, the UR Pony Committee decided to run a Young Pony Series, as part of both the Spring and Autumn Tours and supply gilets to all riders who represented the Ulster Region at the All-Ireland Interprovincial Finals at Barnadown, where our UR Athletes did us proud!”
Thanks must go to Portmore Equestrian Centre for ensuring the smooth running of the show, with challenging courses designed by Ray Buchanan. Abby Morton deserves a special mention, as she had the mammoth task of collating all the Pony League Tables and calculating the final placings on the day. Photography on the day was by Sporting Images NI.
The 138 classes started the day on Saturday and were all decided against the clock and it was Miley Rose Rouke on ‘Crosskeys Beauty’, who was the winner of the 80cm class, which also got her top spot on the podium. Second in the class and also second in the league was Lee Pike on ‘Derrymattery Fudge’. Winter Lily McKinley picked up a fourth place in the class and earned enough points to get third in the league.
Tara Ardbuckle steered ‘Derryvane Gale’ into the top spot in the 90cm, ahead of Alice Hartford on ‘Tabita Gemni’ and Sarah Pike riding ‘Ardkill Bobby Blue’. Jessica McGonigle on the consistent ‘Corlave Roisin Donn’ executed a super jump off round to take fourth in the class and the runner up spot in the league. Third in the league was Eloise Trainor on ‘RB Ginger’.
The results of the 138 1m class spread the league points and, while Cliodhna McEvoy won the class in great style aboard the speedy ‘Etoile Des Chesnaies’, it was Rosa McIlhatton who won the league, having started the day in the enviable position of being so far ahead in league points she could not be beaten.
Rosa also went on to do the double and won the 1.10m league prize, having started in top spot in that section also.
After the 138 riders had finished, it was the turn of the 148 ponies to take the stage. Many of the ponies in the 80cm class had never been asked to jump a speed round before, so it was a steep learning curve for them. Brianna McGuigan on ‘Don’t Bother to Knock’ entered the day on full points, alongside Sarah-Jane Sloane on ‘Lourigan Bay’ and the two girls fought hard and came first and second respectively on the day and in the league placings.
In the 90cm class, a total of 10 ponies had maximum league points and it was Emma McGillion on her roan mare ‘Knockgriffen Girl’, who took all the turns and was placed first and took top place on the podium.
Following on from the 90cm was the metre class and, with nine ponies on full points, there was everything to jump for. The top three placings secured the top podium finishes for Megan Rouke (‘Seapatrick Quality’), Erin Doherty (‘Consider it Dun’) and Helen Rice (‘Cornhill Rosie’).
As expected, the 1.10m was tightly contested and it was a fast and furious class. Coming in to the class with top league points was Zoie Dobbin and she kept her cool and rode a cracking round on ‘Derryvane Belle’ to romp home in 32.49, ahead of Abbie-Rose McGeady on ‘Annaghmore Boomahontas’ (33.73). So it was the league win for Zoie, with Megan Rouke featuring again, to take second spot. Johan Fitzpatrick Burns took the third podium spot, but he then went on to win the top place for the Six/Seven-year-old section.
The final 148 class was the 1.20m and, with only six points dividing the top six riders in the league, everyone expected a competitive class and they were not disappointed. Zoe Keys on ‘Victory Day’ went into the early lead (35.48) and held it until Connie McFadden steered the nifty ‘Infinity’ round in a time of 34.67 to take the win and, with the additional points, also the accolade of winning the 1.20m league title.
The penultimate class was the COH/JNR 1m class and Tara Brennan on ‘Carnone Anabelle’ dominated this section, starting the class with top league points, winning the class and winning the league. The last class on Saturday was the 1.10m COH/JNR class. Eoghan Trainor on ‘Marah’ continued his successful run and won the class, with Zoe Mellett a close second place. Alex Best was third and this secured her the winning rosette, sash and rug for the Junior section, with Sophie Boyce taking second place on the podium, while her cousin Eoghan Trainor got third. The COH section of the league was won by Zac Hanna with Zoe Mellett a close second. With all rugs, sashes, rosettes, prize fund and TRI vouchers distributed, everyone went home for the night to rest before it all started over again on Sunday.

Aldyth Roulston was back on site early on Sunday, laden with another set of fabulous prizes and lots of treats for the children. So, with the base camp set up, it was time for the action with the 128 ponies to begin. The 50cm and 60cm classes are judged using the ultimate time method and this requires a steady even pace to be maintained.
Toby Callion rose to the fore in the 50cm class, taking first and third, with Poppy Dickson taking second. Toby ended up first and second in the league, which was a great achievement for this young rider.
In the 60cm class, the top three placed riders also won the top three league placings, Cooper McManus (‘My Mr Barney B’), Zara Moore (‘Capparoe Chic’) and also with ‘Smokegun’. It was a similar picture for the 70cm, with Poppy Coulter (‘Julie Go Lear’), Cara Gant (‘Barrera Star Attraction’) and Jack Bell (‘Muskerry Crusader’) taking the top three placings and podium finishes respectively.
Anna Rose Garrity started her run of success in the 80cm class, when she won the class and also won the league. The Under 10 class is always one to watch and, with Anna Rose Garrity and Harry Kelly coming into the final on equal points, everyone was expecting a stiff class.
True to form, Anna Rose made a plan for the jump off and she stuck to it, taking every turn available and went on to take first with ‘Boreton Cherokee’ and second with ‘Rosegate Mayfly’, ensuring that she won yet another sash and top spot in the Under 10 league. To finish off her day, Anna Rose was also placed third in the 90cm league.
Harry Kelly had a good day too, when he slotted into third place with ‘Paris’, behind Anna Rose and was placed second in the U10 league. He then got the top spot in the 90cm League and third place in the 1m league.
The 90cm was won by Caitie McEvoy on ‘Where it Began’, with Indie Bingham second on ‘One in the Making’ and Chloe Clarke picking up third and fourth.
Alice Steele started the day with the most league points in the final metre class and, after a superb win, she collected the winning rosette plus the sash, rug and coveted league win. Katie McDonald collected the runner-up spot on the podium, after a very consistent league, to match her second place in the 90cm league.

Alongside the league, the Ulster Region Pony Committee ran a Young Pony Series and this generated a huge interest. This extra dimension added additional incentive to produce young ponies and showcase their potential.
Tim Morton had a great weekend, jumping a range of ponies, but he needs to be applauded for picking up first on ‘Blueoak Rockstar’ and third on ‘Parkhill’s Master Jack’ in the 128 Four/Five-year-old section.
Overall, it was a superb weekend of competition and a fabulous way to end the league. The results on the day can be found on SJI Live. Photos courtesy of Sporting Images.
