Qualifiers draw crowds to Causeway and Glens show
Inviting but challenging course set at club's first show jumping competition of 2024
On Sunday, February 4, Causeway and Glens Riding Club held their first show jumping competition of 2024 at Causeway Coast Arena in Coleraine. The Route Pony Club ran Barrier Health Spring Festival qualifiers in conjunction with the training show and this certainly drew the crowds!
A busy day lay ahead for the organisers and an inviting but challenging course, designed by William Brown, awaited all the competitors wanting to qualify for the Spring Festival final at the end of March.

Hello and welcome to Horse&Field. Our aim is to support local, grass roots equestrian enthusiasts and competitors and keep you all informed of what’s happening in the horsey world, as well as covering all things agricultural. If you haven’t already subscribed you can do so below:
The day started with the ever-popular cross-poles class and saw the Boggs sisters, Amelia and Jessica, both clear on their ponies ‘Oreo Express’ and ‘Easter Bonnet’. Ava McGill with ‘Ellie’ were on a roll, with clear rounds in the cross-poles, 30/40cm and 50cm classes! It was a successful day for Caleb Mitchell, starting with a double clear on his new pony ‘Louis’ in the 50cm, 60cm and 70cm classes and his luck continued with his old faithful ‘Pebbles’, with a double clear in the 60cm and they took a qualifying spot with fifth place in the 70cm class.
Lacey McLaughlin also took home a number of red rosettes, with a double clear on ‘KHS Dovizioso’ in the 60cm class and secured a qualifying spot with third place in the 70cm class. Lacey, however, also took the win on her own pony, ‘CS Galileo’ qualifying for the final in March. Maddison O’Kane qualified ‘Lily-Rose’ in second place in the 70cm class.

Charlotte Killen with ‘Super Ted’ took the lead, with a fast second round in the 80cm class and qualified for the Spring Festival finals. Emily Kane with ‘Beechmount Breeze’ took home the red ribbon, with a fantastic round in the 90cm and a super fast time, qualifying for the 90cm final.
It was Victoria Grieves with ‘Twister D’Euro’, who took top spot in the 1m qualifier and so ended the pony section.
The horse section was not as well supported as the ponies, but well worth it for Monica McGill with ‘Gus’, who had a lovely double clear in the 70cm class and Callie Kennedy with ‘Correen Rock N Roller’ took home the red ribbon in the 90cm class.
Causeway and Glens Riding Club would like to thank the Route Pony Club members, who helped to set up the course the evening before and for their help on the day. Thank you to William Brown for designing the course and to Jake Burnham for his help in the arena setting up and on the day. Thanks to Amy Scullion for the photographs and to all the club members for their help on both days. Thanks to the RDA volunteers for their help in preparing arenas and opening the café.
The club’s next show jumping show will be on Sunday, March 3 and will have both Barrier Spring Festival Qualifiers and NI Equine Awards qualifiers. Entries will open shortly at www.causewayglensridingclub.com
