Samantha sets the standard at Portmore's Summer Show
Samantha Kirk and ‘FSS Indigo’ won the 1.30m Grand Prix at the Three-Day Summer Show at Portmore
Competitors had prepared well for the Three-Day Summer Show at Portmore Equestrian Centre, Aghalee and, as a result, onlookers were treated to some highly competitive classes through the course of the weekend.
The feature class of the three days was the 1.30m Grand Prix on Sunday, where Samantha Kirk and her own ‘FSS Indigo’ set a very fast time of 40 seconds exactly to claim the top spot, more than a second ahead of runner-up, Johan Fitzpatrick Burns riding his mother Jenna Fitzpatrick Burns’s promising seven-year-old ‘Causeway Star’ (41.04). The margin between second and third places was much slimmer, with Shane Treanor finishing a mere 0.03 seconds behind to take third place with Sean Jordan’s ‘Nikittaire Van’T Oosterzand’ in 41.07.

Suzanne Posnett and her mother Pamela Posnett’s ‘Maxim Van Overis Z’ won the 1.20m class on the final day, while the honours in the 1.10m class went to Rebecca Mooney on her own ‘Knockroe Decies Girl’. Sunday saw a great turnout across the 80cm, 90cm and 1m classes.
Saturday’s highlight was a 1.25m Speed class, which was won in fine style by Catherine Spence riding a super-fast round on her own ‘Flyhigh Mable’ (64.78) that proved unbeatable - the pair finished almost three seconds faster than their nearest challenger, Jaymie Crawford on ‘Crystal Ben Magna’ (67.73), with Ben Foster on his own ‘Fazall’ in third (68.63).
The 1.15m class saw Amy Roberts steering Morris G Smyth And Elaine Smyth’s ‘Elamo Eye Candy’ into first place, ahead of Amy McCormick on Stephen McCormick’s ‘GSS Macey Grey’ in second and Ellie McDowell on Colin McDowell’s ‘Vanderbitt’ in third.
Meanwhile, the day’s 1.10m class was won by Niccola Hall on her own ‘Ladykiller’, with Rebecca Mooney on her own ‘Knockroe Decies Girl’ taking second and Laura Brown-McCann on Victoria Brown’s ‘Calgot Cruise’ in third. Clear rounds were plentiful across the 80cm, 90cm and 1m classes.

Friday’s classes proved a good warm-up for the rest of the weekend and saw Cara McFadden riding McFadden Equine’s ‘Orville Jack’ to win the 1.30m class. Hannah McCoosh rode her own ‘Neras Diamond’ to take victory in the 1.20m class, with Eva Sloan riding Clare Sloan’s ‘MCS Zita’ into second place and Clare Sloan on her own ‘MCS Lord Muze’ taking third.
In the 1.10m class, Danni Jennings once again proved her own ‘Super Star’ to be well-named, when they took first place, with Stephen Gibson on his own ‘Sgs Pride Of The Hill’ finishing second and Alex Best riding Charlotte Gibson’s ‘Milford Candy’ into third place.
There were no entries for the 80cm class on Friday, but the 90cm and 1m classes saw a pleasing number of clear rounds.
This weekend at Portmore sees the arena available for hire on Saturday, July 5, with an SJI Horse Show scheduled for Sunday, July 6.
