Young riders show their talents at Meadows' RDS qualifiers
RDS Young Rider, Children on Horses and Junior Equitation tickets decided in Lurgan
Following a busy Saturday of pony qualifiers at The Meadows Equestrian Centre in Lurgan, Sunday, May 4 saw Young Riders, Children on Horses and Junior Equitation competitors take their turn to battle it out for a chance to compete at Dublin Horse Show in August.
The six classes on offer during the day saw a great turnout, with some accomplished young athletes showing their talents. The top spot in the Children on Horses qualifier went to Alice Hartford riding Hazel McGuinness’s ‘Kilderrys Joint Venture’, with Chantal Whitehead placing second with Sarah Crosbie’s ‘MHS Cuffesgrange’.

The boys came to the fore in the 1.10m/1.15m Young Rider qualifier, with Max Foley winning the class on board Hugh McOwan’s ‘Illusion de Hus’, followed by Johan Fitzpatrick Burns riding Jenna Fitzpatrick Burns’s ‘Causeway Star’.
It was a one-two for the McFadden sisters in the 1.25/1.30m Young Rider qualifier, when Connie McFadden rode McFadden Equine’s ‘Domar Van De Neerheide’ to win, ahead of Cara McFadden on McFadden Equine’s ‘Orville Jack’.
The 1.35/1.40m Young Rider qualifier was won by Alex O'Connor riding Catherine O’Connor’s ‘Carreras 12’, followed by Robert Russell on Jane Russell’s ‘Ballyrobin Nimmerdor’.
Two Junior Equitation classes were contested on the day and saw a huge turnout. The first, for ponies not exceeding 138cm, was won by Nikita Dennehy riding Norma Alison Dennehy’s ‘Killerisk Rosehill Empire’, with Ellie Bingham placing second on board Ashley Bingham’s ‘Currabawn Prada’.
The class for ponies exceeding 138cm but not exceeding 153cm was also a tough competition. First place went to Lillymai Walsh on board Des Kent’s ‘Chapel Hill Dark Spark’, followed by Jack Hannigan with Patrick Sweeney’s ‘Lackaghmore Sean Ronan’.
Well done to all those who competed and best of luck to all who will be heading to the RDS!
