Welcome to the 10th Horse & Field podcast, Straight from the horse’s mouth!
I felt it was time to add a bit of balance and have a chat with a male equestrian… I had a really fascinating and entertaining conversation with Wayne Hamilton, who is a rider and BHS instructor based in Castlewellan, Co. Down.
Wayne gave great insight into the dedication required to pursue the British Horse Society qualifications - in terms of finances and also finding the necessary support to get to the right level of competence for the exams... I have new-found respect for all those who have worked diligently to achieve these qualifications - you’re all incredible!
While Wayne is close to achieving his Stage 5 Performance Coach qualification, he fondly remembers his first riding lessons with Lorraine Hutchinson at Barkston Equestrian Centre in Newry and he credits CAFRE for giving him the knowledge to get through his first few BHS exams. He also greatly appreciates the encouragement and support he received from Catherine Crowley at CAFRE.
Wayne currently works as an instructor and coach, while also competing in dressage and showing.
He was recently nominated for a Sport NI coaching award - which is notable as it isn’t often that equestrian coaches are nominated for ‘mainstream’ sport awards!
I really enjoyed our conversation and I hope you do too…
